What is a BioBlitz—and Why It Matters

At its core, a BioBlitz is a simple idea: gather people together, head into a natural space, and document as many living species as possible within a set period of time. But in practice, it becomes something much more powerful.

A BioBlitz brings together scientists, students, and community members to observe, identify, and record biodiversity in real time—from birds and plants to marine life and nocturnal species. These events often include guided surveys and hands-on learning, helping participants build skills while contributing to real ecological data.

Why BioBlitzes Are Important

BioBlitzes are more than just species counts—they are tools for connection.

They help generate valuable ecological data, especially in areas where long-term monitoring is limited. At the same time, they make science accessible by inviting people into the process—turning observation into participation.

They also reflect something we see across our work at Isla Mar: when people engage directly with ecosystems and scientists, they begin to understand not just what exists, but why it matters—and how they are part of it.

Join Us for Our Upcoming BioBlitz Events

This year, we’re hosting three BioBlitz experiences—each one exploring a different side of Puerto Rico’s ecosystems.

Rincón Under Pressure: An Urban Ecology BioBlitz

This BioBlitz focuses on the intersection of nature and human development. Participants will explore how urban environments shape biodiversity in Rincón—documenting species that persist, adapt, or struggle in areas influenced by human activity. This is an opportunity to look closely at how coastal development, infrastructure, and daily life interact with surrounding ecosystems, and to better understand the pressures—and resilience—within these spaces. We will also be doing a small reforestation project too!

The Reserve After Dark

As the sun sets, a different ecosystem comes to life. This nighttime BioBlitz invites participants to explore the reserve after dark, focusing on nocturnal species and behaviors that are often overlooked. From reptiles and amphibians to other night-active organisms, this experience highlights how biodiversity shifts across a 24-hour cycle—and why protecting habitats means understanding them beyond daylight hours. Bring your flashlight and your rain boots!

Breakfast with the Birds

This early morning BioBlitz centers on bird observation, one of the most accessible and informative ways to understand an ecosystem. Participants will help identify and document bird species during peak activity hours, contributing to a broader understanding of bird populations and behavior. Bird surveys like these play an important role in tracking ecological change over time while offering a quiet, immersive way to connect with the landscape.

Each of these BioBlitzes is designed to be hands-on, welcoming to all experience levels, and grounded in the idea that science is something you can step into—not just observe from a distance. These FREE community events are part of Isla Mar's 10 Year Anniversary celebration!
