A note about volunteering
Many of our opportunities are unpaid, and you might wonder why we offer them this way. These activities provide a chance for our community to shadow scientists, engage in scientific work, and deepen appreciation for how our efforts impact daily life on our island. Unpaid roles exist for several reasons: Firstly, Isla Mar is a small company sustained by grants we diligently pursue through numerous project proposals each year. Securing only a handful of projects limits our ability to accommodate additional personnel. Secondly, volunteering demonstrates a commitment to gaining valuable experience and enhancing skills, allowing us to observe your work ethic, personality, and teamwork abilities. Many volunteers have later transitioned into paid positions, and our paid contractors often contribute their time voluntarily to other projects. In our industry, passion for the ocean is paramount. At Isla Mar, we dedicate considerable time to education, outreach, and scientific research out of love for our work. We cherish the opportunity to connect with others who share this passion and commitment to our marine environment. If this resonates with you, we warmly invite you to consider volunteering with us.
We love our colleagues
We delight in collaborating with like-minded individuals and creating avenues to support our colleagues without fostering unnecessary competition. Whether we act as a catalyst to propel our team toward greater achievements or forge enduring scientific partnerships, we are eager to cultivate relationships that contribute to a brighter future for our island.
Fun Fact: Many of our colleagues are also talented photographers. Our website features photos from local scientists Hector Ruiz, Luis Rodriguez, Jaaziel Garcia, Duane Sanabria, JP Zegarra and citizen scientists Anna Posada and Raul Ortiz.
