Marine Debris

As we endeavor to diminish our human impact on the island, Isla Mar is actively contributing to significant environmental initiatives. From organizing beach cleanups as integral components of our youth programs, to orchestrating large-scale art installations crafted from reclaimed debris, and diligently removing abandoned vessels, our efforts are dedicated to making a substantial difference in reducing marine debris around Puerto Rico.

Setting the baseline for a marine debris-free Puerto Rico: In 2022, Isla Mar was awarded a $4 million grant for a three-year project to remove over 70 abandoned derelict vessels (ADV) from around the island. We will also be coordinating a response plan for management agencies to streamline the reporting and removal of future ADV to prevent debris from accumulating in our delicate ecosystems. This project is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Debris Program with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Ongoing.
