Good News: Isla Mar received Puerto Rico's Tax Exemption!

As you now, Isla Mar became a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization last year. During 2024, we also submitted for our local Puerto Rico tax exemption status too. Now, a year later, we’re excited to share some great news: Isla Mar has officially been recognized as a tax-exempt organization in Puerto Rico under Section 1101.01. This is a super important milestone for us and for everyone who believes in protecting our oceans and ecosystems.

What does “tax-exempt” mean?

Being tax-exempt means that Isla Mar is officially recognized as a nonprofit organization working for the benefit of the community. In practical terms, it means that:

• Every donation we receive goes directly to supporting our mission to advance holistic island science through research and education

  
  

• Isla Mar is not required to pay certain local taxes, allowing us to dedicate more resources to programs that protect Puerto Rico’s ecosystems.

How does being exempt help donors?

If you support Isla Mar, your contributions can now be eligible for tax deductions under Puerto Rico law. This means that when you donate, you’re not only making a direct impact on conservation, but you may also receive a financial benefit when filing your taxes.
